What is the main cause of increased blood pressure?

Your heart pumps blood around your body to provide oxygen. This blood-pumping puts pressure on the walls of your blood vessels. This is referred to as blood pressure. Your blood pressure may vary as your heart muscles contract and release, denoted by two numbers which are systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Systolic Blood Pressure

When our heart pumps, it pushes blood through our arteries to the rest of our bodies. Normal systolic pressure remains below 120. Anything above 180 is an alarming situation, and you should get professional help.


Diastolic blood pressure

When our heart rests between the beats, it pumps oxygen to our blood vessels. That pressure is known as diastolic blood pressure. Normal diastolic pressure remains below 80. Anything above 120 is an alarming situation, and you should get professional help.

There are different stages of blood pressure. You can decide whether you need medication or not based on your blood pressure.

Elevated Blood Pressure

If your systolic blood pressure is between 120 to 129 and your diastolic blood pressure is less than 80. This reflects that your blood pressure is slightly elevated compared to normal blood pressure.

Stage 1

If your systolic blood pressure is between 130 to 139 or your diastolic blood pressure is 80 to 89. This reflects that you need to take care of your nutrition and make some necessary health changes.

Stage 2

If your systolic blood pressure is 140 and your diastolic blood pressure is at least 90. This reflects that you need to start taking your medication to keep your blood pressure under control.


Chronic Hypertension

Chronic Hypertension is the extreme case of hypertension if your systolic blood pressure is above 180 and diastolic pressure is above 120. This reflects that you need imidate medical attention as this stage can be deadly and result in sudden death.

Things that can cause high blood pressure :


  • Consuming a high amount of salt
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Excessive Alcohol
  • Disturbed sleep cycle
  • Not eating good nutrients

Heart Attack or Stroke
